User guide

MicWith reads the audio your Mac is playing with a system tap, mixes it with your microphone and writes the result to its own microphone device. Nothing is rerouted and no audio ever leaves your Mac.

Install once

Open MicWith and press Install. It adds a single microphone to your Mac called MicWith Broadcast. macOS asks for your administrator password once and the sound pauses for about a second.

Pick your microphone

Choose the microphone you actually speak into. The built-in one on a MacBook is usually the best choice. You can change it mid-broadcast without dropping the class.

Go on air

Press the lit button. It reads ON AIR while MicWith is mixing, and the menu bar icon turns red so you can tell at a glance even with the panel closed.

Select it in Zoom or Meet

In your meeting app choose MicWith Broadcast as the microphone. Your speaker needs no special setting — leave it wherever you normally have it.

Set the balance

Play something and watch the meters. Move the system slider down if the music covers your voice, or the microphone slider up if you are quiet. Zero on both means the class hears what you hear.

Check it before you teach

Use the test broadcast. Ten seconds of you talking over the music, played straight back, tells you more than any meter. Do it once at the start and forget about it.

One microphone, two sources

There are only two sounds: your microphone, and whatever your Mac is playing. MicWith blends them and presents the result as a microphone called MicWith Broadcast. Meeting apps see an ordinary input device.

Your own audio is untouched

MicWith copies what your Mac plays instead of diverting it. Your speaker stays your speaker, your volume keys still work, and nothing about your own listening changes. If MicWith quits, your Mac carries on as if it was never there.

Two sliders for the meeting only

Microphone and system each have a trim of up to twelve decibels either way. They change what the meeting hears and nothing else. Both rest at zero, which means the class hears the balance you hear.

Clip protection

Voice and music together can push a mix into distortion. A limiter watches the sum and eases it down before it clips, so a loud passage does not turn into crackle at the other end.

Speaker echo removal

Working on speakers instead of headphones? Your microphone picks the music back up and the class hears it twice, smeared. One switch cancels that. On headphones leave it off — there is nothing to cancel.

Test broadcast

Record ten seconds and play it back to hear what the class hears. The playback reaches only your own ears: while you listen, the meeting keeps getting the live mix.
